How Much Sleep is too Much?

Can a baby sleep too much? And is it a bad thing? Probably not! Find out if your baby is sleeping too much and if it's OK?

Since yesterday’s post had to do with average daily sleep requirements, an awesome reader, Michelle H. asked:

How much sleep is too much???

Here was my response: Since every child has individual sleep needs it’s hard to say how much is “too” much. Presumably these super sleepers are so well rested that they are super happy during the times that they are awake.

The only downfall of too much sleep could possibly being not having enough time making connections with the outside world or not having enough time to practice tummy time. But any developmental concerns would be address through your pediatrician. If a super sleeping baby is cranky or fussy during awake times, I would dig deeper to see if the baby snores or mouth breathes (which may cause less restorative sleep) and just run it by their pediatrician to make sure there isn’t anything medically going on with the child.

I know a 14 month old who takes a 3 hour nap on top of 12 hours of overnight sleep. Plus, I know a 3 year old that is still taking a 2 hour nap on top of 12 hours of overnight sleep! These are the reasons we have to be aware that averages are averages and each child is different!

If you have a super sleeper, you know how sweet it is!
